Recently, I have had the honor of helping my sister, Audrey, create a mood board for her upcoming small living room makeover. It was really fun to work with her and my brother-in-law to come up with something uniquely them, with both their tastes being reflected in the final mock-up. There was a lot of texting back and forth and some compromises made (as expected with any project)! But I think in the end we all came together on a design that will be modern AND timeless!

Modern Cottage Style
I would say my sister Audrey’s design style is similar to mine in that we both love what I’m calling ‘cozy modern cottage’. She loves shades of green, brass hardware, natural wood tones, things collected and the mix of old and new (all of which is very on trend right now btw). She is most inspired by the Georgian era (think 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie) when bold colors and decadent moldings were done right! So expect to maybe see a nod to that historical style in the final small living room makeover.
The Space
While Audrey’s living room is not large (it’s more on the medium to small side), it is connected to her kitchen, dining and office nook. This is the central space of her home where their little family hangs out and guests gather. It’s also visible from most angles in the home making it the perfect spot to makeover as it will have a big impact on how the the house feels as a whole.

Plan of Action for this Small Living Room Makeover
Over the last week, my sister and I have started to source key elements in our design such as the arched cabinets (found some similar looking arched oak cabinets on Facebook marketplace and painted those suckers black!) and the Pakistani rug. My sister opted to use her current cream sofa to save on cost and the flooring was installed upon move-in a couple years ago. What’s left to do (and it’s a big one) is ordering the faux fireplace insert and then building the faux fireplace itself. Putting everything together and styling will be last and probably the most exciting part.
I can’t wait to see how this small living room transformation will turn out so stay tuned for a full post with all the ‘before’ and ‘afters’!
